WCA Meeting (http://www.wca.org)
Tuesday March 18, 2003
4:00PM -6:00PM
at Hewlett-Packard in CUPERTINO
Location: 19091 Pruneridge Ave., Cupertino, CA
Building 48S, Oak Room Auditorium

Plan to join us on for what promises to be two very interesting talks. Our
March meeting focuses on technology that expands the usefulness of WiFi. Jim
Thompson of Vivato will describe their WiFi switch, which bring smart
antenna technology to the WiFi space while Richard Watson will describe
Symbol's converged Data and Voice technology

March WCA Meeting Agenda

"Bringing Wi-Fi To The Enterprise"
Jim Thompson, Director of Product Development, Vivato

While the overriding benefits of wireless technology are well-recognized and
relatively undisputed, enterprises have only recently begun to demand access
to wireless networks. Jim Thompson will explain how a new technology, the
Wi-Fi switch, is set to revolutionize how Wi-Fi is implemented by the
business community and service providers. Wi-Fi switching is a new
architecture for wireless local area networks that combines gigabit Ethernet
switching, Wi-Fi and smart antenna design. Comparing Wi-Fi to the growth of
the Ethernet in the 1980's and 1990's, Jim will explain the role that Wi-Fi
switches will play in accelerating the trend toward wireless LANs and
built-in Wi-Fi on mobile devices. As part of the discussion, Jim will talk
about Vivato's soon-to-be-launched indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi switches which
can send and receive multiple transmissions while dramatically extending the
range of Wi-Fi from tens of meters to kilometers.

"WLAN VoIP"
Richard Watson, Director of Telephony Product Marketing, Symbol

Given the fact that 40% of today's in-building workforce is mobile,
contacting associates to communicate business critical issues that enable
rapid decisions requires a in-building mobile telephony solution. This
"solution" is a convergence of 802.11 Wireless LANs and Voice-over-IP that
creates a new product offering: Wireless LAN VoIP. The IEEE 802.11 wireless
LAN technologies, though widely available, were not designed to support
wireless telephony applications and extensions to the base architecture and
vendor specific implementations are key to delivering quality wireless VoIP
solutions. Technical hurdles such as voice-prioritization, wireless
security, proper call control protocols, and PBX integration options are all
challenges that need to be addressed to provide a solid product offering
with high voice quality and telephony connectivity.
Symbol will describe their WLAN VoIP product that operates over 802.11. This
WLAN technology, though widely available, was not designed to support
wireless telephony. Symbol will explain how they are addressing this
technical challenge.

WCA is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to the mutual benefit of Northern
California companies and organizations involved in wireless communication
technologies.
