For an *interior* router, using WAN port with NAT router creates a problem:

Linksys Gateway mode = NAT = wan computers can't access lan computers

This is a general problem for all wireless routers when NAT is enabled.

You can avoid this problem by:
- setup wireless router as "AP with switch" (ignore WAN port)
- turn off NAT in wireless router (use as pure router, not NAT gateway
router)

Think of the W11S4 as a 6 port switch. One port for wireless, four ports for
LAN, and one port for router. By not using WAN port the W11s4 becomes an AP
with 4 port switch. In this scenario the router port is only used for
management tasks like configuring WEP.

Using WAN port in an *interior* NAT router raises a number of issues and
requires more config/maintenance. First you need to configure the Linksys to
Dynamic Routing mode. The routers use RIP to broadcast routes to each other.
You may also need to setup static routes. For Windows to see network shares
you'll also want to use WINS or an appropriate hosts table otherwise Windows
won't find shares/computers across the network segments. I would give each
Linksys WAN port a static IP address to simplify debugging problems.

Jon...
IMHO the easiest way to setup is to put all computers on one subnet
(192.168.1.0 is Linksys default). Don't use the WAN port for all *interior*
W11S4 routers. Give each W11S4 a unique LAN IP address because they all
default to the same (192.168.1.1). Then the W11S4 will act like an AP with 4
port switch and all clients in the network are on the same subnet. Turn off
DHCP in all *interior* routers. I always assign the DHCP server to the
Internet gateway router (exterior router). There are known Linksys issues
with DHCP over wireless so make sure your firmware version supports it. I
have successfully setup this scenario with other equipment brands, you may
run into firmware limitations with W11S4 or WET11 but theoretically it
should work.

wireless router

you can use the wan port if you like...
you just need to set up everything as if it were a cable modem...
DHCP on the wan port, DHCP services running and configured internally or on
the lan and wireless side...
only noticeable difference is that nobody on the wired network on the other
side of the wan port will be able to reach nodes on the linksys wired/
wireless side of things.
if anyone else has different experience, please share. I would love to know
how to rig this up so it would work.
follow my thinking:

BEFW11s4-------> wet11__BEFW11s4-------> wet11__BEFW11s4----->
wet11__BEFW11s4---
                |\ |\
|\
                | \ | \
| \
      wireless clients wireless clients
wireless clients

I would want everyone to be able to see everyone else so you could manage
the network w/o a golf cart or a go-cart.

I don't think these boxes will support this, but I'd love some feedback on
the feasibility.

thanks.
