One battery you might look into using is the Optima Red and Yellow-Top
series. These are sealed gel batteries designed for offroad and other harsh
automotive conditions. I have one of these in my car for running the stereo
system and computer gear and they work great. The Red and Yellow models
have to do with whether the battery is deep-cycle or not. The deep cycle is
probably what you are looking for since you can "deep cycle" it (e.g. charge
it and then use it until nearly dead, then charge it again) as with marine
use.

The nice thing is they are literally "no maintenance". Since they contain
gel electrolyte, there is no need to add water; they are totally sealed. In
fact they are designed for racing so even if the battery is cracked open and
part of the gel is lost, they keep working.

Also, you can mount them anywhere, even upside down without problems!

They run around $100-125 and can be found at many automotive stores such as
Auto-Zone, Pep Boys, etc.

Car batteries are designed for a high load at a short duration. They don't
provide as much power to a trickle load like an access point. A gel cell
or AGM type battery and a lot of marine batteries (commonly deep cycle)
provide better support for low volume loads. If I were looking for the
most cost effective means I would go with a marine battery and see how
well that works. if it is not sufficent then Gels or AGMs are the way to
go (although even a 33 AH AGM battery can run you $50 and a 100 AH is
$125). Depending on the voltatge input range for your device, you
willl need DC-DC converters. I noticed that a lot of the PoE APs have
a wider input range then walwort powered APs. For example a wi-lan
VIP110-24 can be powered direct from battery as its range is greater than
LVD and HVD cutoffs.
