I was just playing with the link calculator at
  http://www.demarctech.com/techsupport/cals/link-budget-calcs.htm

with a 30 mW radio at each end you'll need 12 dBi antennas (the calc says dBm but I assume that's a mistake since it doesn't make any sense ...) at each end. With a 100mW radio you could get away with just an omni at one end and an 18 dBi antenna at the other end. Neither of those are "souped up" ... the WAP11 says 18 dBm which I think is 100mW. I think that if you buy a nice big tupperware to put it in, with some holes for cables and so on, you could mount that outside and with another one attached to an 18dB antenna point at it.

I'm sure the experts here can correct me if I messed that up at all ;-)

Just to make sure I'm not off my rocker -- for a 1 Mile run, I'd definitely need some sort of directional antenna, right? Would I need a souped up AP to do it? (For those familiar with the South Bay area, I'm doing a run across DeAnza College.) Thanks.

Hi All-
I might be needing some equipment to do an outdoor 1-mile link up in the San Jose area later this week. (yay for short notice...) Are there any vendors out there that can supply us with the relevant antennas, mounting equipment, access points/bridges, and enclosures for this, at a reasonable price? I've got a small business I need to link up. :| Thanks guys -- you guys have always come through for me before :)
