Thanks Ryan, I have cc'd this reply to BAWUG as the questions are quite broad.

Nice website. Where are you based?

I wonder if you could give me some direction for my assignment?

It is to network a University, 7 buildings, 1 Internet connection thru main building. Currently has several small networks.

What has already been decided is that the backbone will be optical, Cat5 will run through to APs. The number of APs is not yet decided although I know the limits of 802.11a&b as far as user/distance ratios. I am going to limit the number of users per AP to whatever the departmental requirements are for bandwidth. Can this be done? If so, how? I have never set-up an AP or even an adaptor so I dont know if it is at the Application layer or at Data Link?

Also, There will be hotspot areas such as an Atrium and Courtyard that need to be connected. Normal APs should be fine, but I am thinking along the lines of a tower which can provide access and a backup to the fibre (not as far as speed but availability).
Can antennae be used as AP, and then as a bridge between AP?

Also, what management packages are available for network monitoring?

Thanks

Rob

Subject: Site Survey

Hi Ryan,

I was wondering if you could let me have the example site survey you mailed to Mike?

It would really help me work out how to develop a design spec for my assignment (the Campus WLAN).

Thanks in advance.

Rob
