I have set up an 8 mile WiFi link and am having trouble getting it
working properly. Here is my setup.

I was forced to use a repeater, as there is no line of site from the Home
with the DSL to the remote location. The repeater is set up on a neighbour's
roof, with the parabolic dish pointed at the remote location 7.9 miles away
(there is a line of site from the neighbour's roof to the remote location
on
the top of a mountain). The 14dBi Yagi at the house picks up the back
scattered signal from the parabolic dish on the neighbour's roof without
difficulty.
At the remote location, my Orinoco gold card, when connected to the parabolic
dish, records signal of -75dB, and is able to connect in client mode
(using 128bit WEP). At the remote location, I am unable to get the
DWL-900AP+ to connect in client mode. But it does connect when it is set
to bridge mode.
The problem is that the wireless connections at the remote site seem to
cycle
down every few seconds, whether I am connected with the Orinoco Gold PC
card or the DWL-900AP+ in bridge mode.
Pinging the AP from the remote location shows 20-30% packet loss.
The net throughput of the link is on the order of 50kbps, but the
link is largely useless because of repeated dropping of connections.
Previous discussions on this list have alluded to possible overheating of
the repeating AP -- but this behavior is the same on cool evenings
(~40 degrees F) as during the heat of the day (70-80+ degrees F).
Anyone have suggestions for how to debug/fix this problem? Thanks, Geoff
