First, are you sure youve got a healthy 12db omni and pigtail? Infant mortality is a reality, Ive had more than one "new" piece of equipment be bad out of the box.
Second, what kind of antenna are you trying to hit on the other end? If it's a high gain onmi theres a chance you are in the shadow below it. A 2db gives a nice big, bulbous doughnut pattern, that helps get a good signal from such a source. A higher gain gives a tighter, flatter and more defined, and more sensitive to downtilt type pattern. Thus, its posible a lower gain antenna can get a better signal, especially if theres a noticeable altitude difference between the two radios.

I sprung for a Senao card and temporarily hooked it up to a ratty little 2db omni that was ripped off of an Aironet PCI card. Coverage was fantastic! I had a range of a good couple blocks.
Then, my (expensive, for me, anyway) 12db omni and pigtail arrived. I decided to blow off the hacky antenna and use "the real thing". And.... my coverage got incredibly lousy! Very strong when right underneath the thing, but exponentially worse with distance.
I thought that perhaps I was just seeing antenna pattern problems, and maybe I was in a dead spot in the pattern. Nope, I wandered around, and didn't find any "lobes".
Anyway, I hooked up the ratty little 2db omni into the other connector, so BOTH antennas are now going and... everything seems OK so far.
But this bothers me. What is going on? Or, more specifically, how can I begin troubleshooting what is going on? Do I need much more equipment or training to troubleshoot this one?
