Hmmm Different experiences for different Folks. My oldest Linksys is over 2 years old and though the User must Press the reset Button and set the thing up about once every 6 months, I have never seen it Die. I have used Edimax SMC Dlink Speed stream Belkin and others. The best for my purposes has been the Edimax the models I use have a serial port on them which I connect to a backup external analog modem. This gives me a backup path to the internet via Dialup. Most of my installs are commercial many having medical reporting deadlines so lack of Broadband is no excuse. I am using the Edimax and providing PC anywhere, Email FTP and Web services through the port mapping function. The Worst unit I ever used was the SMC unit with the print server built in. I have never seen one of them which did not fail. Also some Dlinks and Edimaxes have failed but they are cheap.
You mention the Soekris board. It would be sweet if such a board was as easy to configure as these routers. Also some of the functions desirable would be the ability to map Wireless access and to control access to the LAN while granting access to the WAN... I finally tracked it down to the Linksys router. Thinking with a rather foggy brain as it took me a bit to get to this point, I replaced the Linksys box with a Speedstream Powerline network router (see: http://www.speedstream.com/products_powerline.html). Ok... Now I can view web pages again, but I can't mount my samba shares on my UNIX box through the Speedstream router. I can't even mount my NFS shares. Seems that the Speedstream is doing something strange here. So I get out an extra Soekris Engineering net4521 board (http://www.soekris.com/net4521.htm) and load up FreeBSD on a compact flash to do NAT. I power it up with an extra wall wart I had lying around and all my networking works perfectly and much faster as the Soekris box has two 100Mb/s ethernet interfaces. Sigh.
