Yes they use CDP (cisco discovery protocol) and some additional
multicast-based communication amongst themselves. I recall reading
that this traffic helps client handoff but I don't have any
technical details on hand.  My APs (340) show these groups in
the Associations menu:

 -multicast-   AWC Mcast AP-Only   Unassigned   014096ffff00          
 -multicast-   AWC Mcast All   Unassigned   014096ffffff          
 -multicast-   AWC Mcast BSS   Unassigned   014096000000      

Some Googling[tm] doesn't show up any protocol information, however.
