I've given up on trying to convince my neighbors to forego easy, reliable, "private", 
dumping-priced $35/month SBC/Yapoo DSL service (or "promotionally-priced" Comcast 
cable modem) for a complicated, weird, flaky, expensive, "shared" community WiFi 
network. 

I think after a few years of "broadband consolidation" shenanigans, they may be more 
eager to try something more open. By then, I can only hope that the gear and know-how 
needed to build community networks will still be available, open, cheap... and legal.
