We need some technical expertise for the installation of a wireless web cam to be installed on Alameda Creek as part of a non-profit study in salmon migration.
The basic concept is to install two 802.11b wireless web cams at the BART weir adjacent to Alameda Creek. The web cams will provide live video of the creek in an area that has a structure that is impassable for salmon. We would like to get some feedback from this group as to the type of equipment needed and how to successfully operate a web cam in this situation. Our proposed equipment includes: 1. Wireless web cam - (DLINK DCS-2100+ Internet Camera) 2. Wireless bridge/router - (D-Link Air Premier DWL-1750 or other device) 3. DSL modem with 1 static IP address 4. Web Server 5. Antennas, cables, solar collector, battery, weather-proof enclosure, mounting hardware Know limitations include: 1. There is no power on site - all power must be supplied from 12 VDV photovoltaic and batteries. An inverter can be used to connect to the camera or camera can be modified to accept 10-12 VDC. There is power at the receiving station for the bridge/router, DSL modem and computer. 2. The nearest access to a phone line (for our DSL connection) is 0.5 miles - need extended range Wi-Fi. 3. Equipment needs to operate outside, rain or shine. The expertise we could use assistance with are in choosing the right equipment, especially the antenna and bridge/router and determining if the equipment can operate from solar/battery power and how to modify web cam to operate over the extended range. Any technical feedback is greatly appreciated. You can contact me directly off list if you prefer.
