Now I'm shopping for a WAP/Firewall for his home LAN. He's getting a static IP, so we don't have to worry about making the WAP/Firewall play nice with PPPoE and DHCP etc. We just need to be able to secure the computers in the house from MSBlaster etc., and secure the WAP from WarDriving (not a big risk in his area, moderate security like WEP will be adequate).
He has 2 laptops in the house, and a mother-in-law unit with a tenant who has a desktop computer. He'd like all 3 to have wireless access, so he needs 2 wireless PC cards and 1 wireless network card in addition to the WAP. It would be nice if the UI was easy enough to use that once I get him configured he can actually manage it himself. He has a several-year-old SonicWall firewall/hub at his small office in town (I'm his "IT" person for the office, and I'm only here once or twice a month), so if a SonicWall product is equally good to other similar products, it would be good to have both be from the same manufacturer, with similar UIs etc. Or, if the WAP is affordable enough, he might want to upgrade to a WAP in the office too.
The SonicWall SOHO TWZ seems to be a bit of an overkill for his needs (at the price), he doesn't need the VPN tunnels etc. Is there a less elaborate SonicWall AUP/Firewall that would meet these needs?
If not a SonicWall, what other WAP/Firewall units do you recommend that we consider? A recent unhappy experience with LinkSys (at another location) was tarnished by the fact that I was trying to get it to play nice with Earthlink's PPPoE/DHCP, so I'm more than willing to give LinkSys another try if it's recommended for use with a real DSL line. In the past I've had good experience with the SMC Barricade, but I have no experience with the latest models.
Thanks!
