There was an idea for a research project a few years back, where you
would have a central database for mapping between geo coordinates and
MAC addresses of wireless access points. Say that one user is out
war-stumbling, and finds "oh, here is an access point with MAC
ff77aabb... and I'm my GPS says 47.3N 97.2W, so lets report that to
the database". Then another user comes around, finds the same MAC,
queries the database, which then answers: "You are probably near
47.3N, 92.2W." The idea was also that the first user could "leave a
message" at that coordinate ("isn't this a nice cafe, just try their
muffins") and the second user would then "see" this message. :-)
I don't know if they actually started that project, and it has nothing
to do with Glenn's article.
