I just setup a wireless backbone for my nonprofit organization; and, it's
running quite reliably now.
- Used Alvarion BreezeNet 2.4GHz FHSS for long range backhaul.
- Used D-Link DWL-900AP+ with additional antennas for building-building
bridging.
- Used D-Link DWL-614+ for in building APs
- Used D-Link DWL-120+ for client connections (using MMCX connectorized
antennas where necessary.)

Good luck.

I started with D-Link hardware. But if you are familiar with unix,
consider using Soekris hardware with pebble linux software. Much more
flexible than off-the shelf hardware.

Turn on WEP. It's probably sufficient for your needs.
