Hello,

I am having a problem connecting to nodes and I think it might be a signal
strength issue. I have a 19 dB antenna connected to a 15 dBm pci card. The
card is an SMC 2602 PCI card attached to my fedora box. In monitor mode
with Kismet I can pick up a good 30 base stations from my location on the
waterfront of Treasure Island (Three of which are SFLan nodes coming from
the North Beach area).

The problem is that I can not connect to anything. I have confirmed that
my driver (ADMTek 8211) works by connecting successfully to the base
station in my room. Anything else I just cannot connect to.

The only reason I can think of is that the nodes around me are
transmitting at a much higher power than I am. This would be the only
reason I could think of why I can see them in monitor mode, but not
broadcast to them. If they were transmitting at 200 mw they would have a
good 8 dBm of power on me. Is this a reasonable diagnosis and would this
mean that if I had a 200 mw card I could get my signal to them?

Is there a reasonably priced 200 mw PCI card out there without having to
drop $70 on a pcmcia Bridge card?

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,
Rob Forrest
