Does Apple provide a means for updating the firmware on an AirPort card?Normally, the Software Update panel should handle that, but your system/Mac version may preclude it.
Another option would be searching the Apple Software site for updates, try this:

Though it would probably be good to update your firmware, since you mention you don't have a problem connecting elsewhere, it seems like your problems lie outside of your PowerBook.
