I posted here in early April as I searched for replacements for
Cisco WGB-352 workgroup (8 MAC max) bridges.

I just gambled on six Senao / Engenius NL-2611 CB3+ Deluxe
from www.bizsyscon.com.

Official site:
http://www.senao.com/english/product/product_wireless01_outdoor_1.asp?tp1id=
02&tp2id=02&proid=000064

After only a few hours of study:

Pro:

Cheap. Only $740 shipped for six, or $123 each.

Seemingly high power. Works as a bridge to a Cisco AP-352,
works as a bridge to another Senao in 'point to point' mode.

One RP-TNC antenna connector, just like Cisco WGB.

PDF manual isn't bad compared to many.

Con:

I want to watch throughput with MRTG, but haven't found any SNMP
(as the 2511 seemed to have) nor are there enough useful values
in the web interface that a little scripting might snarf. All you
get in the web interface is link quality percentage, current
transmission rate, and a table of known MACs on the bridge.

Wants a cross-over cable to connect to a PC. Plus: It comes
with a 6 foot red snagfree crossover cable. Wish it wanted
straight-through like a WGB-352, or had a cross-or-not switch
like the WET-11.

The firmware upgrades are somewhat crude: you need to edit the
'do.bat' file so 'tftp' (not included) knows your IP address.

I tried upgrading the firmware from 1.8.0 to the 1.9.0 (3/5/2004)
on Senao's site, but I couldn't get it to take, so I don't know
what I'm doing wrong or what might be in the new release.
'do.bat' sends 'dualmode_sp.bin' 259K, but there's also
'ap.elf' 438K that's not mentioned in 'do.bat'.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Tech support / downloads section on Senao's site is minimal,
and the firmware 'readme's - if any - are more brief than that.
Not much on http://www.engeniustech.com/ or Broadband Reports either.

I have 2 CB3-Plus's.

I too feel that the lack of any type of usable interface makes this piece of
hardware the most ugly prom queen ever. Nothing to look at and frustrating
to deal with but she does "put out". That's the only thing going for it and
going forward that won't be enough to keep me a customer. Good for a few
cheap dates and that's about it.

I wanted to use them for a long distance shot (5.5miles with minor foliage)
with a couple of 24db grid antennas (probably illegal output values).
However the lack of software features keeps them relegated to a close
proximity solution.

Engenius is such an oxymoron in this context. I'd name this line of
hardware "The knuckle dragger".
If they could ever spend a few bucks on SNMP and useful interface John
Chambers would have to take notice.

So what does the AP-352 believe is going on? Does it see multiple
associations?

Believe it or not, I feel the same way, (and my wife sells a ton of
'em.)

You're close to legal (probably are for a 24dBi (dBi, not dB) antenna
on a 23dBm radio in terms of EIRP
for a PTP link. You'll need 1dB of loss somewhere between the two to
stay 'in-bounds'. If its a PTP link
then you're allowed 30 - (antenna gain - 6) / 3, so 30 - ((24 - 6) /
3) or 24dBm! By the time you account for
coax losses, you're probably more than fine.

You may *not* be legal in terms of out of band emissions when operating
close to the edges of the band (say, on channels 1 or 11.)

Well, I also decided that it was too expensive and decided
to make my own. I bought the connectors and crimping tools
from Electro-Comm:
  http://www.ecommwireless.com
$5 for the N male and $6 for the Orinoco connector. About $35/ea
for 3 crimping tools. I scrounged the LMR-100 and shrink tube.
So far, we have about $12 in parts, ignoring the crimp tools.
However, what killed me was the time it took to make a single
pigtail. I didn't buy a cable stripper and had to do the cable
prep with a pocket knife and diagonal cutters. Figure on about
30-45 minutes each (including testing) and ruining a few connectors
before announcing success. Crimped connectors and nice, but you
don't get a 2nd chance if you mess up the crimp.

My guess is that I would have been better off buying instead
of building my own. Lately, I've been buying from:
  http://www.fab-corp.com/K1.htm
$19 for a 12" Orinoco cable.

No. LMR-100 is good coax for short pigtails, but not long
runs. LMR-100 is about 19dB/100ft or 0.19dB/ft. 3dB is half
your power so 15.7ft of LMR-100 will eat half your power.
Actually it's a bit worse than that as each connector pair
will eat an additional 0.5dB.

The whole idea behind a pigail is to provide a flexible
connection to your LAN card so that the big, fat, heavy,
and low loss coax cable to the antenna, doesn't break off
the connector on the wireless LAN card.

No. Antenna runs should be made with LMR-400 or LMR-600.
LMR-400 is 6.8dB/100ft or 0.068dB/ft. Much less attenuation
than LMR-100.

Assuming your numbers are right (I personally think the connector loss
number is probably too high *for a properly installed and maintained
connector*, but the argument works better if I just use your numbers)

12" of LMR-100 + 48" of LMR-400 plus the connector pair to hook them
together:
       .19 + (4 * .068) + .5 = .962

    60" of LMR-100:
       (.19 * 5) = .95

The difference in loss is negligible, and in the favor of the single 60"
piece of LMR-100. The single piece of LMR-100 will be cheaper than a 12"
piece of LMR-100 *and* a 48" piece of LMR-400 *and* the connectors necessary
to hook them together (remember you need one male and one female (less
commmon) N connector to do it without the extra loss of a double-female
adapter), plus you'd need to keep that connection weathertight.

I stand by my original claim that at 60", the single chunk of LMR-100 is the
right choice, but at 60', something bigger (at least LMR-600 at these
frequencies) is the right choice.

I have the tools and it was still a big pain. Never again will I make a
pigtail with the tiny soldered connections.
