The 54G is not bad for SOHO hardware, which would lead me to believe there
are other solutions to your question.  "Increasing range" can mean many
things.  Can you share more about your setup with us?  Who/Where/etc...

I think it is better to worry about computing your "total path loss"  
rather than getting fired up on the biggest loudest talker.  Also consider
an external antenna, either omni or directional.  (ergo what are you
trying to accomplish?)

To answer your question: On APs, I like the Orinocos.  Maybe you can eval

Lastly, if you feel like hacking your AP, look into the www.Sveasoft.com
