...Heard at an SCTE conference...An ISP equips its trucks with laptops running a simple UNIX program that looks for open Wi-Fi accessibility and sends an e-mail through it back to the NOC. The e-mail header identifies the owner who is then warned of the potential problems that can befall the user if it is open due to negligence. I didn't hear how they know beforehand whether or not they do a trace to assure it is one of theirs.
Another ISP's reply at another session said that open Wi-Fi systems often result in support calls from the subscribers who complain of "poor performance" and who actually are locked onto a neighbor's also-open AP. The support call identifies this situation and talks the user through the process of locking down their home system. A company in Austin, Affinegy, produces a software product that automatically configures all a home's PCs and AP/router. I haven't seen it but talked to their folks at a CableLabs show and looked at the site. . . . j o n a t h a n -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rick Smith Sent: Friday, June 30, 2006 6:46 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; WISPA General List Subject: RE: [WISPA] War Driving Police Uhh, and that's the same reason ISPs have been sued (admittedly un-documentable) for trying to make money off that idea... If you KNOW it's open, you invaded someone's privacy to figure that out, and there starts the whole argument all over again... -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Peter R. If anyone is going to be war driving I would think it would be the internet providers, since it's your agreement with them that is being broken by leaving your WiFi unsecured. -- Regards, Peter RAD-INFO, Inc. - NSP Strategist We Help ISPs Connect & Communicate 813.963.5884 http://4isps.com/newsletter.htm -- WISPA Wireless List: [email protected] Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/ -- WISPA Wireless List: [email protected] Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/ -- WISPA Wireless List: [email protected] Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/
