Graded index 850nm/1300nm multimode, at least back in 1990 or so when I was a fiber tech, had basic specs that permitted 2km before repeating. I installed many projects with those distances before repeating. Actual equipment tolerances would have enabled the real distance to be much further. And that was with LED-based equipment, not even LASER.
