Covad, Speakeasy target smaller offices

NEW YORK
Smaller businesses are being offered higher-end office phone
capabilities at more affordable prices and with fewer upfront costs by
Covad Communications Group Inc. and Speakeasy Inc.
Covad is bundling its broadband and Voice over Internet Protocol phone
services with an office phone system called TalkSwitch from Centrepoint
Technologies Inc. The price of the bundle starts at $459 per month for a
system that can handle up to eight simultaneous phone calls, a number
Covad says can typically support an office of 25 workers.
TalkSwitch is designed for easier self-installation than a traditional
office system, often referred to as a PBX for private branch exchange.
PBX systems, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars to buy and
configure, are used to provide a wide array of functions such as a
receptionist switchboard, voice mail, call transfer and conferencing.
SpeakEasy, which delivers its services using Covad's broadband lines, is
offering a Web-based phone system that also eliminates upfront costs.
SpeakEasy One comes with a monthly fee of $79.95 per user plus $399 for
a T1 broadband connection for an all-inclusive bundle that includes free
desk phones and unlimited Voice over Internet Protocol phone service to
48 states and 22 countries. A two-year contract and a minimum of 10
users is required.
