While the average household currently downloads about 2 gigabytes worth of Web content each month, the dramatic proliferation of new technologies influencing the use of the Internet--from streaming video to full-length movie downloads to the manipulation of ever larger data files--could soon see consumption by residential broadband users averaging hundreds or thousands of gigabytes each month. Without enhancements to the nation’s Internet infrastructure, this increased demand could soon slow the Internet down to a crawl.
