While the average household currently downloads about 2 gigabytes worth
of Web content each month, the dramatic proliferation of new
technologies influencing the use of the Internet--from streaming video
to full-length movie downloads to the manipulation of ever larger data
files--could soon see consumption by residential broadband users
averaging hundreds or thousands of gigabytes each month. Without
enhancements to the nation’s Internet infrastructure, this increased
demand could soon slow the Internet down to a crawl.
