Ladies and Gentlemen,
Please respect each other's opinions and avoid personal attacks of any nature. We have a challenge presented to us (CALEA) and we need to hear all sides and work towards developing a goal. The goal is to work through these mandated rules and develop a platform, maybe a shared platform which can be beneficial to all WISPA members. A group of rural telcos (13) banded together here in Indiana and purchased a mediation server and became a TTP. I would think that the same thing couldn't be done for WISPA members. Why don't we start looking at CALEA as an opportunity instead of doomsday. In looking at the startup costs in working with a TTP, the quotes I have received so far are anywhere from $3000 to $10000 for startup. If 100 WISPs put up $3000 it would pay for the mediation server platfform to become a TTP. Obviously someone would need to host the server and dispatch the intercept probes when a subpoena is issued. It would have to be operated as a business. The number of investing WISPs could obviously vary and all sorts of twists on financing the equipment could be looked at, but the concept I'm trying to get across here is that if we work together, we can lower the costs of compliance for everyone. If we continue to bicker and battle with each other's pride then we will end up as Mark is predicting. Think about it everyone. Anyone want to volunteer to start working on this? I would expect that over the next 12 months, there will be quite a few more TTP's than there are now. Obviously, competition will drive the costs down as it does for everything else. I remember when total control chassis were $30,000, now they are $100 fully populated. I know of at least one company who participates in this list that is working on a solution, but it is not my place to talk about it. Word is that there will be more information in about a week. Be patient folks, the sky is not falling, its only raining......or in the case here in Indiana today SNOWING.......HARD!
