Jonny and Mark, one way another, costs always trickle down to the buyer.
There is no free lunch (except perhaps all this UL spectrum we get to
use). The good manufacturers though consider these things basic budget
items and tend to have them well-planned and included in the product
development costs. In reality though, the costs to achieve regulatory
compliance for those markets one wishes to sell product is not onerous
and is but a minimal line item in the overall budget. A vendor that
can't afford certification is telling you they are taking short cuts, an
attitude that likely permeates the product decision making. Other clues
might be products with little backward compatibility, haphazard
discontinuance of features or products, lack of a roadmap, etc.
