 I do this with all of my Compaq 3000R UPS's in the NOC. I can't help but
warn you that these batteries when connected in a series will kill you
(literally put you in the ground 6' deep) as the DC voltage has more than
enough amps to do this. I accidentally touched my battery case with the
"hot" wire and it threw sparks like I had a huge welder on the NOC! 

It made my Mules rare straight up!

The charger is designed for the size and number of batteries in the 
original configuration.  Changing the quantity and/or type of battery 
risks damaging either the charger or the batteries.

Also, runtime is determined by the batteries, so changing them changes 
the runtime.
