Gross weight capable vehicle requires a CDL !
This is nationwide - atleast this is what the state troopers who have
stopped us have told us on numerous occassions.......
For Hire or Not - weight limits are weight limits.....

In most states, as long as the vehicle is only operated by the vehicle
owner, and it is not used as a common carrier, (to transport people or
cargo for hire), and it is not used to carry HazMat, and it is not driven
across state lines, a CDL is NOT required.
In Michigan, my chauffeurs class 3 with motorcycle endorsement allows me
to operate any road legal vehicle within Michigan as long as it doesn't
have HazMat that requires placards aboard it. I've had the chauffers
since I was 18, but, an operators license is all that is needed unless I
am acting as a common carrier.

You will need a commercial driver's license with air brakes
certification. It is a specialty truck to be sure, you aren't going to
use one of these for installs. The thing weighs 46,000 lbs and you can
tell where it has been. A smaller snorkel might be good for installs,
say a 40' rig? This is an 80' rig.
