From the Naics site: http://naics.com/
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS, pronounced
Nakes) was developed as the standard for use by Federal statistical
agencies in classifying business establishments for the collection,
analysis, and publication of statistical data related to the business
economy of the U.S. NAICS was developed under the auspices of the Office
of Management and Budget (OMB), and adopted in 1997 to replace the old
Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. It was also developed
in cooperation with the statistical agencies of Canada and Mexico to
establish a 3-country standard that allows for a high level of
comparability in business statistics among the three countries. NAICS is
the first economic classification system to be constructed based on a
single economic concept. Click here <http://www.naics.com/info.htm> to
learn more about the background, the development and the difference
between NAICS and the SIC.
Graham is correct that the NAICS is used for Sales and Use tax for your
state. I had to give one when I filled out my form for DC. It can also
be used to find statistics for your industry, which you would use in
writing your business plan. My guess is that if you have other
government forms to fill out like a business license, they might use
this as well. For instance in DC, you can become a Local Small
Disadvantaged Business Enterprise and this is one of the things they ask
you.
We all would be classified as 518111, which is ISPs, so it's not really
a number for one company but a classification for an industry.
Hope that helps.

What is a NAICS code and why is it something important to have? Should
I get one? What will I do with it?

What about 518111?

I believe that's what I filed under, but I'd have to go dig through
some paperwork since it's not one of those things I keep in the front
of my brain.

For our business tax application in DC we had to put down a NAICS
code.
I picked 541519 because nothing seemed to match. I wonder if anyone
else
has had to look through these and found something better? 541519 seems
to be the "other computer related services" bucket. You would think
there would be enough of us around that they would have Internet
Service
Provider by now. : )
Thanks
