The big difference is MT makes hardware, and STAROS buys it and integrates
it.
But their mentality is not different. Lonnie's (unofficial comming from me)
perspective is no different. They make OS for boards, that they integrate
into their systems and sell.
They are not likely to be willing to port their software to new hardware
platforms, that they do not intend to use themselves. We've been turned down
for that.
The reason is that it is to timely to maintain a bunch of different firmware
revs, for a bunch of different boards. When using Intel IXP425 systems, each
manufacturer's board requires a speacial firmware, and it is not good enough
to just share the same processor in design. So it was easy to amke a
UNIVERAL x86, version, but not possible for the new trend of IXP425s.
With STAROS you get lucky, because they've used many different boards to
date, there fore giving you options.
It was publically stated that the new trend for STAROS will be to focus on
selling certified systems, not push Software seperately. But would continue
to offer software since so many have committed to buying just software. And
not likely that they'd discontinue support or sales for a product that they
have sold previously.
This is one of the BIG advatanteages of STAROS, is it does give integrators
option to build their own in a pinch, and not be held hostage by a
manufacturer, if production is in shortage.
The same advantage is shared by Ligowave.

Before I get slammed with reply's; CORRECTION: Both StarOS and Mikrotik
have competing hardware to UBNT.
Sorry, I know Mikrotik has put a lot of money in the 133c boards and
they don't want to open it to other hardware that competes. I don't
know about Lonnie, and mean no dis-respect. I don't know if the WAR
platform or anything Lonnie is releasing is actually produced by/for
him. I am assuming he uses existing hardware... (ASS-U-ME)

That is funny that both Mikrotik and StarOS are walking from UBNT. If I
remember correctly, it was the amount of storage on the board that they
had issues with. Mikrotik has a little more motive because they are
selling competing hardware.

That is true. They were originally going to support the LS2 (the radio
inside the PS2) but later backed away from that. I believe there was an
issue with the hardware. They needed UBNT to make a change in order to
support it.

I have heard that this unit does not run StarOS v3. Can anyone confirm
or
disprove this?
