That guy (Chris) is a good friend of mine and is very approachable, in 
case any of you have questions on his monitoring setup.  (He babysits 
the *nix-based NOAA cluster at LSU)

I'm quite impressed with Ubuntu, as well.  It's not easy to hit the 
hardcore server crowd *and* the desktop crowd.  Several die-hard Debian 
users (including those who write .deb packages) have switched to Ubuntu 
for everything now, particularly their LAMP stack.

Remember, you can always compile from source, as well.  "apt-get source 
<package>" is what you type
