I spent 4 weeks back and forth arguing with Valemont on their forums about my issues with VPN and their change of how they handle hotspots and speed control. At that time all I had was StarOS v2 Wrap boards and loved them but they wouldn't handle XR2's and the Wrap boards being end of life we decided to go to War V3 Worked and worked with them to get the issues resolved. After being repeatedly insulted by them and being told by Lonnie to do the industry a favor and go out of business and let a real ISP take over my clients I flipped out and installed a Mikrotik. At that time every one of my problems with speed and VPN problem were solved within 2 min from the MT's being installed. That is why I switched. I wish that Valemont had more of a support department because I thing for the most part the StarOS boards just work. But they did not just work for me In that instance. I still use them for all my backhauls but I use MT for all my Routers and I have grown really fond of winbox and The Dude. I will probable lean more toward Mikrotik for these reasons. That and Lonnie is a jerk.

I would strongly suggest switching to a StarOS board with V3 and atheros chipset cards. If the rest of your APs are StarOS, having a few Mikrotik APs in there makes for a little bit of a management problem as they are not as easy to maintain as a StarOS AP is. The WAR2, WAR4 and X4000 boards all have plenty of CPU to handle 50+ clients. I have one client that has 120+ associations across four sectors with an X4000 and it handles the traffic (and cbq bandwidth shaping) with no problems. Other thing to check would be the client CPE ethernet autonegotiation, especially if the radio is pinging without loss. If you are using CPQ19 units, you might want to change the autonegotiation down to 10 full and see if that helps. Some newer switches and routers do not do the autonegotiation well and you need to hard-code one side to ensure a good connection to the bottom.
