In addition to unlocking it, you flash it to recover locked features. If you have a free and clear phone its easy enough to get them unlocked. Flashing a phone can be a pain, mostly in finding a flash that is not also locked or that has the features that you want. Most phone manufactures are not releasing unbranded flash packs for phones that have been sold to only one cell co.
