Back a number of years go, we used Cisco routers
with E&M cards to link a bunch of remote base stations
back to a major dispatch center. Across about 9
states in fact, for an air ambulance service.

Fairly simple, we spent a day in the Cisco Lab at St Louis
showing cisco what we wanted to do.

Tone remote panels at each end connected to the 1750 or
3600 series routers, and it worked very slick. They could
talk and listen from each station, key up the transmitters,
change channels, turn scan on and off, etc.

Recently that dispatch center took all that out and went
to this, which is basically the same thing but they say
"interoperable communications" - the FEMA buzzword
that magically makes everything better...

Those of us in public safety know we had interoperable
communications for years, we just called it mutual aid
channels. But I digress.......

We originally used a Frame Relay cloud, but then they
went to internet as it became more available.

I hear they have a lot of that equipment available if
someone wants some used equipment.
