If the current flow is different between hot and neutral it will trip.
Some things to look for:
    Loose neutral wire on the outlet or in the breaker box.  Yes, it can 
be at either end.
    Attached device leaking current to ground.
    A little bit of water somewhere.  I have on in my house the when the 
wind blows just right during a rain the breaker trips.  All the outlets 
are in weather proof covers and sealed between the cover and the vinyl 
siding.  No idea  how water gets in, but that has to be the problem.
    I have had bad GFCI devices that just trip sometimes.  Replacement 
works.

Check your local code before putting in a regular outlet.  Some require 
all "outdoor" outlets to be GFCI protected.  Others would consider your 
box to make it "indoor."
