We were 24 bucks per hour on a 2400 baud modem. I used it to the max. Bob-

Back in 1965, when I first saw it, DTSS apparently had a network of multidrop leased lines (voice-grade) using FDM multiplexors to support a whole heap of 33ASR Teletypes at different schools. The 33ASR was smokin' hot at 110 baud (we didn't need no stinkin' bps yet). In the 1970s, IBM wired up whole banks that way, with multidrop llnes at 2400 or maybe if you were lucky 9600 bps. We were well ahead of that in the early 1980s, when I was at DEC, which was probably the most networked company in the world at the time. Office buildings full of engineers had a few lightning-fast 14,400 bps modems, with 56 kbps links between the computers in the same room before Ethernet took over (around 1983). I had a CompUServe account for a little while. It was $3/hour at 300 bps, $9/hour at 1200 bps. Guess which one I used.. And my take-away is that at each step of the way, at each time, that was seen as the cat's pajamas. And we got a lot done with it. -- Fred Goldstein k1io fgoldstein "at" ionary.com ionary Consulting http://www.ionary.com/ +1 617 795 2701 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WISPA Wants You!
