Once you've done enough of that sort of work, you'll know about how long a
given repair will take, assuming there are no wacky complications. You can
make a somewhat educated estimate of the cost, and you already know how fast
technology depreciates. If you tell them that it's cheaper to buy a new PC
than to fix the old one, and they still want you to do the work, do the
work.
