I just saw this link on Digg.com of all places. I hate spreading
stuff like this, but if AT&T is putting something out there, should
WISPA? Maybe saying AT&T more competition is better?
ATT is going whole-hog to push its acquisition of T-Mobile, its only
nearly-nationwide GSM competitor. Somehow they want to portray this
as creating more competition, since having more than one compatible
carrier is somehow less competitive than only one... if you're AT&T!
This silly little video doubles down on the stupid. It says that
they can't get enough spectrum quickly enough to handle all of the
smartphones they've sold, which they say use 24 times as much
spectrum as voice-only phones. (Hmmm, are voice users subsidizing
iPhones? Well, who told them to sell all those iPhones in the first
place when they didn't have the capacity? And why don't they try
things like microcells and distributed antenna systems?)
So to fix this, they want to buy T-Mobile for its spectrum. This
works if you accept the following analogy. Springfield has 100,000
people in 10 square miles and is congested. East Springfield has
50,000 people in 5 square miles. Springfield says that it needs to
annex East Springfield in order to relieve congestion. After all,
then it would havd 15 square miles. But they're ignoring the fact
that East Springfield is already populated. Likewise, ATT is
ignoring T-M's customers. Or do they not need spectrum, since T-M
sells Android, not iPhones?
A propaganda piece extolling the value of *unlicensed* spectrum would
be nice, though I'm not sure who takes any of this stuff seriously...
it's not as if YouTube videos had to pass Advertising Standards
Authority approval. (The UK's ASA is *much* stricter than the US's
FTC in enforcing truth in advertising.)
