However these days the term is used very loosely, basically referring to
a 'emulation of direct connect' over some sort of a packet network,
mostly Ethernet circuits.
There are many different implementations of such in the 'plastic boxes',
some easier and nicer than others... e.g. EoIP in mikrotiks, etc.

There's a very specific meaning too. Pseudowire is circuit emulation
over a packet network. "PWE3" (edge to edge emulation) is a standard
for emulating lower-layer services, such as TDM and ATM, across
Ethernet or IP. It's widely used in Carrier Ethernet devices,
especially as a way to provide incidental numbers of TDM circuits
(usually DS1s) across a non-TDM network. Thus a SONET network might
be retired in favor of Ethernet, if there's a need for only a little
TDM. Cisco and many others support it. But I don't think it gets
down into the "plastic shell" product class characteristic of WISP gear.
