The original post talks about using a Linksys on a chimney. Make sure you
have outdoor rated gear if you install outdoors. It is more than temperature
range, humidity is also an issue. Check which bands you operate in since
higher RF power is allowed in the upper UNII bands 5.X GHz and outdoor with
2.4 GHz.

An end to end VPN is needed but you must also deal with interference and the
security of the link itself. I would definitely put a hardware firewall at
both ends, use NAT and change the default addresses of the internal network.
Also disable WAN side management since this makes hacking so much easier.

Compare Proxim with Cisco, they have been in the PT-PT outdoor business much
longer. You may also want to use a different frequency band for the indoor
and outdoor segments to avoid de-sensitizing the receivers and additional
security.

Subject: [wirelesslan] I second those! re. Securing net & Linksys
quality

These last two posts pose questions that are currently issues I would
like answers to as well.

I am looking to secure the boss' networking from his home since both
he and his wife would work from home. I also would like to connect 5
users in an office across town and secure the wireless link via VPN.
I was going to test with Linksys BEFVP41
(http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=607)
and
BEFSX41
(http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=433)

1.) I have already determined that I would prefer to use VPN to secure
the wireless networks proprietary content, but I would like to know if
I have missed something. Is there a better way?

2.) Cisco/Linksys routers/VPN hardware as relates to securing wireless
links to small numbers of home/office workers with VPN. Is this
hardware a losing proposition?
