Yes AP are capable of changing modulation CCK, DQPSK, DPPSK etc.. for ex. .11g APs will fall back to .11b modulation schemes as required... this will not effect other ongoing transfers ... the wireless fabric is basically an ethernet collision domain operatin over a single pair of wires ( not two pairs as in a wired ethernet LAN) therefore at any given point there is only one side of one conversation happening on the wireless fabric and each of these conversations will use the appropriat transfer rate and modulation...
