Hi,

For starters you are using far too much power and you should really get back
to basics - i.e. get good gear. I have run links of up to 10km without the
use of any fancy antennas and never have I had the need to use amplifiers.
In fact, there are laws regarding power output and they are there for a very
good reason.

The first possibility, is to use the OSBRIDGE gear. It comes in a brown
cardboard box, no fancy pictures, no installation guide - just a plain CD.
It is a great unit. It has never failed me when making long or short
distance links. The unit and antenna are combined in a full sealed
mast-mount box and it comes with 10m of CAT-5 cable.

For very difficult links (over the sea or in very noisy environments), I use
the Star-OS WRAP board. This does not come with a sealed box, you have to
take care of that yourself (although I think the SOEKRIS board is available
as a sealed boxed unit). Once again I mast mount it.

You might be a bit wary of mast-mounting the electronics in case you get
failures. Originally I used LinkSys, SMC, D-Link, Smartbridges units and I
was forever having to reset the units, swapping them out and generally
cursing at them. Since I cahnged to OSBRIDGE and STAR-OS units I have NEVER
had to reset a unit.

ANTENNAS
A final point, although this may sound strange, the lower the gain the
antenna the better - IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE ALIGNING. I have found that
the best omni has been the 8dbi from Stella Doradus and I have been able to
make a connection to this antenna at a distance of 6km (reliably with no
return calls). In terms of point-to-point mesh antennas I have now
standardised on a 9dbi grid with perfect results.

Use good-gear, keep to the rules and a 10km link is the norm!
