WLAN Security for a business, government or military setting is best accomplished with
technology that can meet these criteria:
1) "Device Agnostic" - that is, choose WLAN security technology that supports all
brands and manufacturers of Wireless Access Points. That way you can upgrade hardware
without effecting your security.
2) "Location-Based" - that is, choose WLAN security that can precisely (I mean with in
3 feet at least) locate ALL wireless devices and access points. There are multiple
reasons for this. Here are just two:
a) "Location-Based" security allows you to reinstate an "inside" and an
"outside" -- and establishing a perimeter helps determine if alerts are for benign
activity outside your area (FedEx Truck) or potentially malicious (employee-installed
AP, unauthorized device) inside your area. Imagine a switch in a conference room that
turns off WLAN access when it's flipped. Imagine that when a person leaves a defined
area they also loose all WLAN connectivity. These things are possible with location
aware WLAN security systems.
b) "Location-Based" security does not rely on an encryption standard that is
hackable. As a case in point, within weeks of adoption weaknesses and vulnerabilities
to the much heralded and anticipated 802.11i standard just ratified major WLAN players
have already been found.
