Revused patch - bug in setting up masks
In response to Jaap's query about the mask set-up; I think that this was a bug.
I can't find my original notes from six months ago, but I can't think of any
reason for treating the last octet differently from the others.
So, I've reformatted the code into easier to read chunks and corrected the mask
entries.
Reviewed the code - again - but I've not done a great job of spotting my own
mistakes on this one so far...
