The Special Magic may be nothing more than disassociating the adapter from
whatever Wi-Fi network it's associated with.
This means, of course, that you have a choice of either 1) being able to access
your LAN using that Wi-Fi adapter or 2) being able to capture in monitor mode -
you can't have both. That could mean a choice between "Internet access" and
"monitor mode".
That is probably due to hardware limitations of the Wi-Fi adapter, software
limitations of the macOS driver for the adapter, or both.
