I've built Wireshark 99.6 using MSVC 6. When I updated the Wireshark source
tree from 99.2, I needed to update some of the CYGWIN utilities. I also have
Python 2.3 & 2.4 installed.
Make sure you've followed the steps for a new source tree. (ie. verify the tool
set, dist clean, make)
I build in a DOS window with the following environment:

That article was pretty good but does not solve the problem.
I'm using Visual Studio 6.0 (MSVC6) and therefore don't require the
Platform SDK to be installed.
At least according to
http://www.wireshark.org/docs/wsdg_html_chunked/ChToolsMSChain.html.
The vcvars32.bat has been executed.

build Wireshark under Windows XP, using cygwin as shell and Microsoft Visual C
as compiler/linker.
