My guess is that you are attempting to capture packets from the wrong interface. Most likely the default interface is set to something like, "Adapter for generic dialup and VPN capture" instead of the capture interface you're interested in capturing packets from.
Take a look at "Capture -> Interfaces" and try capturing from the correct interface.
