It might work, but it's not guaranteed to work.  We make no claim that, when 
1.8.0 comes out (1.7.x is a development-only version number; when we release 
the result of that development, the first version will be called 1.8.0), 
plugins built for it will work on any older version, and they probably won't 
work.

They *definitely* won't work on 1.4.4, however, and that appears to be what 
you're trying to do:
