My ΒΆΒΆ: I like the idea of using old tape recorder symbols for this. Starting a
network capture is likely similar to starting the tape recording. In the old
days, the button to start recording had two vertical bars: ||. The stop button
had a square, the play button a triangle. Also note that if colors were used the
recording bars were colored red, *not* the stop button. This also makes sense,
because pressing that record button can overwrite your current data/tape,
caution! pressing the stop button has to destructive effect.

My suggestion: the record button should have to red vertical bars.
The stop button a black or red square.
Both buttons should have a circle sourrounding the bars and square in whatever
color makes sense.

Alternatively as Edwin suggested, a single toggle button, which probably has two
advantages:
- no confusion
- one less button in the bar
