N.B. I updated the 1.12 and 1.10 Ubuntu and OS X builds to run configure with "--enable-warnings-as-errors". Those builders now compile with strict warning checks but configure.ac in those branches and in the shipped tarballs still have warnings-as-errors disabled by default.
