I believe that I have the MySQL startup problem resolved. Thanks to all.

It was related to the Witango permissions problem I had earlier in the week, 
when I attempted to get access to the web files from my laptop and screwed up 
the permissions on the various directories in the ServiceData directory.

I'll try my luck at creating a taf file now...
