Since that could take as long as 1-2 minutes (depending on what service you
use, how busy they are, and how you interface with them), that's not a very
user-friendly way to do the checking.
The most complete checking uses JavaScript in the browser (for best user
experience), code in Tango (as a fail-safe to the browser JavaScript), and
finally, the credit card company themselves.
Just my opinion.
